The owner Niccolò has recently refurbished all 5 of the one and two bedroom vacation rentals with new kitchens and bathrooms, revitalising the historic palazzo where they reside just a 10 minute walk from Santa Croce, the Arno River or Palazzo Vecchio. For those who are new to the city, this means you are really in the historic district of Florence: close to museums, monuments, shopping and restaurants. In fact, if finding yourself close to the sights and within easy walking distance of the Duomo, the national train station and Ponte Vecchio, is important to you then these accommodations have you covered.

If you are looking for apartments that boast spacious rooms, fully equipped kitchen and conveniences for both short and long term stays, including storage space, an elevator and a secure position, then, again, you too - are covered.

Borgo de Greci: Florence vacation rentals with full kitchen

Between a Duomo & a National Monument

Located on via Borgo de Greci, one of the oldest “vias” (Italian for roads) in the center of Florence, there are four apartments which capture the uniqueness of the location, the design and the personal type of comfort that Nicolò likes to offer his guests. The selection of neutral whites and grays in the air conditioned apartments creates a soothing and relaxing atmosphere which invites its guests to sit and set a spell before diving into the exhilarating sites and activity of the city below.

A Review of Borgo de Greci

We loved: the silence. even though set in the city center, the apartments are removed form the chaos by a couple of floors, and sound proofing windows

Ideal for: those looking to make Florence their home for a short but especially a longer stay

These apartments, carved out of a building which has been in the family for generations, each feature a unique floor plan, where the peculiarities of the architecture shine through.

A window at the front entrance will catch your attention, much like a deep set porthole in the hull of a boat or, as in this case, a one meter thick defence wall. Then, there are the steps leading in and out of the bedroom, because they detour around an arch hidden within the wall.

Or there is always the possibility you will be staying in the apartment with the frescoed ceiling, which you can admire from your comfortable double bed. These are just some of the personality quirks that the vacation rental apartments at Borgo de Greci have put on display.

Borgo de Greci: Florence holiday rentals with brand new bathrooms

Organised on two levels, the four independent accommodations include two apartments with 2 bedrooms and two with one large bedroom. The most prestigious apartment is positioned on the third floor, and requires a quick trek up one more flight of stairs after the elevator ride - but it hosts a very special secret.

Set above the red roof tiles of Florence, there is a private and tranquil terrace looking towards the looming tower of Palazzo Vecchio. This amazing little corner of Florence gives this particular accommodation its rightful name: an apartment with a view. The floor plan includes a large living room with a double sofa bed, that make full use of the natural light from the terrace. There is a double bedroom with a walk-in closet and a bedroom with a single bed.

Borgo de Greci: Sitting room with view outdoors

The downstairs opens to the more spacious of the four apartments with a large living room complete with a sofa bed, a picturesque fireplace, full dining room, brand new kitchen and a bedroom with a cozy sitting area, where you can kick off your shoes and just inhale the atmosphere of the Renaissance city. A hidden niche in the wall is thought to have been the draw for bringing water up from the well on the ground floor …. many, many, many years ago - today you will find up-to-date plumbing in all of the apartments. Particularly pleasing is the way the wall accents pick up the gray in the trim, fireplace and flooring.

Modern Comforts in a Timeless Setting

The palazzo has undoubtedly been restored and reorganized many times during its long existence, and yet it still manages to hold on to some of the more delicate details that remind you of its history.  The stone steps, which you may or may not see if you use the elevator, the carved decor, and the classically colored hallways.

Next door, there are two apartments that can be rented individually or together as a three bedroom, three bathroom accommodation. These apartments are completely new, and focus on creating a cozy and tranquility environment, ideal for those planning on a long stay within the city walls.

The one bedroom, one bathroom proves to be exceptionally quiet as it is totally looking towards the internal courtyards. The two bedroom apartment, with a complete kitchen and separate living room, houses a special surprise on the ceiling of one of the bedrooms with en suite bathroom, come and check out the pastel colors in the fresco!

As if the beauty of these rooms were not enough to fall in love with the apartments Borgo de Greci, then you have to admit that modern accessories, such as full WiFi access, air conditioning and a flat screen TV make them all the more appealing.

Borgo de Greci: Double bedroom

They nicknamed it "Rustica"

For no specific reason, the 5th apartment which is just down the street, on an even quieter little via is affectionately called "La Rustica", meaning a bit rough around the edges. There is a private entrance, and a flight of stairs that lead to, as the Italians would say “chicca” (key-ca), a sweet spot! And there is nothing rustica about the decor, boasting a brand new bathroom, a modern eat-in kitchen and a small, but cosy, living room. There are two contained bedrooms - a double and a single. All of this revolve around an internal courtyard with a table and chairs. There may not be any view to speak of, but a stay in this rental promises absolute tranquility.

As is Nicolò’s style, the apartments are furnished in comfortable chairs, tables, sofas and personal accents, with an soft mix of antique and trendy. The style is inviting and it seems as if every detail has been thoughtfully considered from the selection of towels and soaps in the bathroom to the dinnerware in the kitchen, from the garden furniture on the terrace or courtyard to the  throws laid out on the double beds. The owner, normally busy running his country estate, has a  bilingual staff ready to assist you with the apartments, arranging tours and tickets or offering helpful suggestions about restaurants, day trips and cooking classes.

You maybe wondering why someone would give up the opportunity to call this marvellous building in the historic district of Florence home. Probably because Nicolò prefers to call the wine estate, just outside of the city borders, his family home. Guests are encouraged to ask about setting up a cooking class or a wine tasting appointment and though the easiest way to get to the cantina is by car, you can arrange for a private driver or catch the local bus which leaves you practically in front of the vineyard.

Calling Florence Home for the Holidays

Set just a few blocks from the chaos of the heart of Florence, this apartment borders on an area where you are just as likely to find the locals visiting the stores and restaurants as you are the non-locals (aka tourists).  Things here are just a tiny bit more relaxed: a morning at the fruit and veggie market in Sant’Ambriogio which is only a few steps away, take an early morning walking along the Arno river, or maybe a visit to Giardini Bardini before the city comes alive. When you choose to stay at Borgo de Greci, you will have the net sensation that you are living Florence as a native would.

It has been more than 25 years since I took my first steps in Italy and I still haven’t found a good reason to leave.  Between the food, the culture, the history, the art, the landscapes … did I mention the food? I have become a lifelong student. It didn't take long to learn that Italians all have stories that long to be told; stories that paint a picture of how hard work produces character, how life is made of ups and downs and how good it feels to laugh.
